Best Sports Drinks
No matter what time of year it is, sports drinks are a great way to stay hydrated before, during, and after a workout. From weightlifting to running, sports drinks provide much needed electrolytes and calories that help our bodies perform at their best. Here, we take a look at some of the best sports drinks on the market so that you can fuel your way to success!
How could we not put Gatorade at the top of our list?! One of the best sports drinks, and one of the classics, Gatorade has even branched out to the fuel market. Newly introduced Gatorade products include Gatorade protein bars, meal bars, electrolyte gummies, and protein drinks. Originally created by food scientists at the University of Florida in 1969, Gatorade at first was only available in the “orange” flavor. Since then, classic flavors like “frost” and “fierce” have taken to store shelves. Gatorade even offers G2, a lower-calorie, lower-sugar, yet still high in electrolytes alternative to the original Gatorade recipe.
A bit of a newcomer to the sports drink phenomenon, Powerade quickly became one of the best sports drinks available. Introduced in 1990 by the Coca-Cola Company as a way to compete with Gatorade, Powerade has developed into its own unique sports drink over the past decade. Powerade contains four key electrolytes lost in sweat: sodium, potassium, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B2. One of Powerade’s main selling points is that it has a similar nutrient composition to chocolate milk, but contains less sodium than chocolate milk. Similar to Gatorade, Powerade recently released a lower-calorie version called Powerade Zero, which contains no sugar and no calories.
Sold in powder-form only, HEED energy drink, produced by Hammer Nutrition, has been one of the best sports drinks for endurance athletes for years. HEED is made in the USA, gluten free, vegan certified, MSG free, and contains no simple sugars. In short, HEED really covered all its bases to make sure that this sports drink was suitable for any athlete! HEED went above and beyond in formulating its electrolyte profile; they included chromium polynicotinate, which helps to maintain steady blood sugar levels, as well as l-carnosine for buffering lactic acid.
GU Roctane will round out our list of best sports drinks. GU creates a whole line of products ranging from energy gels to drink powder for the active person who needs those extra supplemental electrolytes to keep going. GU Roctane is slightly higher in calories for those endurance workouts (250 calories per serving compared to the ~100 of other best sports drinks) and contains maltodextrin and fructose, two carbohydrates that are easily digested and rarely cause stomach issues.
Not all sports drinks are created equal. The best sports drinks will always contain key electrolytes, balanced calorie to sugar ratios, and are usually tried-and-true drinks used by professional athletes. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
